Happy Wednesday SPH students!
Have you registered to vote yet? Do you need to fill out an Absentee Ballot? Not sure what that this? It is easy! An Absentee Ballot is filled out if you are:
- Absent from your county or, if a resident of New York City absent from the five boroughs, on Election Day.
- Unable to appear at the polls due to temporary or permanent illness or disability (temporary illness includes being unable to appear due to risk of contracting or spreading a communicable disease like COVID-19).
- Unable to appear because you are the primary care giver of one or more individuals who are ill or physically disabled.
- A resident or patient of a Veterans Health Administration Hospital.
- Detained in jail awaiting Grand Jury action or confined in prison after conviction for an offense other than a felony.
And remember you must be registered to vote before you submit your Absentee Ballot Request. You may also find a guide on how to register for voting here. GSGA will be reminding you every week!

Sustainable SPH Club

Mission: A student outlet for sharing information and concerns regarding the impact of the health of the environment on human health. It is also the student arm of the sustainability committee at CUNY SPH, which endeavors to help CUNY SPH meet or exceed the sustainability goals of Sustainable CUNY. Goals of this club include: implementing and sustaining a composting system at CUNY SPH, campaigning for more energy efficient practices, a B.Y.O.Cutlery initiative, etc. This also includes information sessions with faculty, documentary screenings, and networking events.

Letter from GSGA President Zoe
Dear CUNY SPH Students, Staff and Faculty,
It is my pleasure to welcome our new students as well as our returning students, staff, and faculty for the Fall 2020 semester. I want to introduce myself as your current Graduate Student Government Association (GSGA) President for this academic term.
As COVID-19 continues to threaten the public health of the entire planet, the pandemic has exacerbated and illuminated public health crises that have been threatening the lives of US citizens long before the virus. Gun violence and mass shootings, mass incarceration, widespread unemployment, housing and food insecurity, lack of healthcare in a system that prioritizes profits above people. The pandemic has shed light on injustices, most notably systemic racism, and while a significantly higher number of Black and Brown people contracted and died from the virus in our city, we watched on social media as police took the lives of one unarmed black person after another, in broad daylight, on camera, with no shame.
The pandemic has illuminated just how detrimental shrinking budgets for education, healthcare, and social services can be, especially juxtaposed to the superfluous funds allotted for “national security,” law enforcement, police, and the military–not to mention the corporations supplying them with all their weapons, machinery, firearms and armor. Rationing PPE to health care workers on the frontlines who risk exposure to a deadly virus every day contrasted with police and federal law enforcement officers standing hip to hip in riot gear from head to toe, firearms at the ready pointed at US citizens peacefully protesting in cities all across the country makes it clear the extent to which taxpayer dollars are being mismanaged and improperly used. Now more than ever, our global and local communities need public health professionals to lead the way to advocate for and help bring about the change we so desperately need, which is why I am so happy to announce that this is the largest enrollment SPH has ever seen and the first semester completely online!
My mission this year as President is to create a sense of community through virtual events, including weekly Zoom study groups and meet up groups, relaxation and exercise workshops, movie nights, a speaker series, social hours, dance parties, and more! Serving alongside me is our wonderful Executive Board composed of our Vice-President, Senators, and other officers. You can find more details about all of us by visiting the GSGA website. The purpose of the GSGA is to represent and serve the students of SPH. I invite all students to voice any issues, needs, and suggestions that you may have so that we can advocate for you and help support you through this year at SPH. I encourage all students to connect with GSGA via our weekly e-mails, Instagram, Facebook, and by attending GSGA events throughout the year. I want to extend my gratitude to all students, faculty, and staff who make SPH the place that it is, and I wish every student a wonderful and successful academic year!
Regardless of our concentration or degree, we all have committed to a career in public health, which means a life of service, and I am honored to share virtual classrooms with you, learn from you, read your discussion board posts and responses, and be a part of this wonderfully diverse, brilliant community.

We are also calling for students in the Advanced Certificate and Doctoral programs to serve as Faculty Student Council (FSC) Assessment and Curriculum Committee Members, and for three (3) students to serve on the Faculty Student Disciplinary Committee (FSDC). Hello SPH students,
Thank you to the SPH students who joined the GSGA’s zoom social last Friday! We shared stories, laughs and answered questions students had. Stay tuned for the next zoom social! Also, we are still in search of student nominees to serve as Senators and representatives on the Faculty Student Council (FSC), Faculty and Student Disciplinary Committee (FSDC) and Committees for the 2020-2021 academic year. The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is currently hiring contact tracers and contact tracer supervisors to perform COVID-19 case interviews and contact tracing to support the citywide COVID-19 response using a trauma-informed, culturally respectful approach that builds trust and facilitates the free sharing of information. CUNY’s administration already has the power to divest from fossil fuels, conserve energy to reduce carbon emissions, eliminate single use plastics and MOVE TOWARD 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY.
Essential Worker Support Group

Essential workers are employees who are (or were recently) tasked with working outside of the home during shelter-in-place orders related to COVID-19. Essential workers have been on the front line providing invaluable services to society as we navigate the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic. It is with great gratitude and respect that we offer this open weekly virtual support group for essential workers. The goal of the group is to establish connections through sharing experiences and to engage in mutual emotional support. Resource sharing will also be encouraged. Hello SPH Fellow Students!
We are encouraging students to become CUNY SPH leaders and nominate themselves for the next Graduate Student Government Association 2020-2021. We are looking for students interested in serving in GSGA positions, Faculty Student Council and Committee positions.
This week is National Public Health Week from April 6 to April 12. GSGA is doing an Insta story campaign with Public Health posts. Every day you will see a different public health topic posted on our Instagram, Facebook and website! Today’s topic is Violence Prevention. You may share your public health messages, tag us @GSGA_CUNYSPH and we will share your story, too! See the topics below!

CUNY Food Resources Available during COVID Outbreak
Check out CUNY food pantries available for all CUNY students on different campuses throughout NYC. Please be sure to confirm hours of operation by calling or emailing before you visit any food pantry. Check here for food resources available to any CUNY student at specific campuses.
The City of New York is providing assistance to New Yorkers during the COVID-19 crisis by delivering meals to those who cannot access food themselves. Click here to see requirements and to sign up for food delivery. If you don’t meet all of the eligibility criteria above, you can still get help at your local food pantry. You can find the food pantry closest to you here.
