GSGA Newsletter
February 03, 2022
Hello SPH students,
Welcome to the Spring semester of the 2021-2022 academic year!
We hope that the winter break gave you an opportunity to recharge with family and friends and that you approach this new semester with an eye toward staying safe, healthy, and taking time for yourself. That includes taking advantage of the university resources for time management, career services and counseling, should you need them.
The Office of Student Services will continue to provide advising, counseling, and other services remotely. Students whose needs cannot be met remotely and need to meet in-person will be required to submit a request for an in-person appointment to Dr. Lynn Roberts, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Alumni Relations at [email protected].
Additionally, we would like to share with you important information on upcoming events, safety policies, procedures, and services, GSGA student awards, and student resources.
Sincerely,
GSGA 2021-2022
Upcoming Events
Save the Date! Student Empowerment Day
Join the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities (CCSD) and other organizations for the Student Empowerment Day on February 10, 2022 at 10:30 am via Zoom, where we rally for Fund Disability Services in New York to support students with disabilities in colleges throughout the state of New York. There will be politicians, guest speakers, and student leaders advocating on behalf of all Disability Service programs. The login information is available here.
Safety Policies, Procedures, and Services
Required Face Coverings
In accordance with CUNY’s Mask Mandate, you will be required to wear a face covering at all times, regardless of your vaccination status, except if you are fully vaccinated and are alone in an enclosed space such as an office, conference room, or meeting room. Please click the link to review a helpful summary of CUNY and CDC Guidance on Masks, Vaccines, Quarantine and Isolation.
Vaccination and Booster Verification
- Students registered for in-person and hybrid classes who are eligible for a booster on January 28 when the Spring Term begins must submit proof of a booster on CUNYfirst by March 1.
- Students registered for in-person and hybrid classes who become eligible for a booster between January 28 and the end of the Spring Term must submit proof of a booster on CUNYfirst within 30 days of becoming eligible, unless they have received approval for an exemption or exception.
- Students who fail to meet the booster documentation uploading deadline will be subject to administrative action including having a stop on their record that prevents registration for Summer/Fall 2022 classes.
Random Testing
- CUNY is continuing the mandatory random testing program for vaccinated employees and students accessing CUNY facilities. Each week, up to 20% of randomly selected individuals across the University are contacted to be tested for COVID-19.
- If you are selected in any given week, you will receive an email from [email protected] with instructions to complete registration and will have to test at a CUNY test site within 7 days (no appointment necessary).
- Your test result will be available within 48 hours and you will maintain your Access Pass to CUNY facilities while the results are pending. If your test result comes back positive, your Access Pass will be removed, and you will be contacted by a Coronavirus Task Force Liaison for guidance.
- If you do not comply with the mandatory random testing requirements, your access to campus will be suspended and you may be subject to disciplinary action.
- If you do not plan to be on campus for part or all of the Spring 2022 semester and are selected for random testing: you must inform [email protected] if you are a student and [email protected] if you are an employee, as soon as you receive the notification, so that the testing requirements can be deferred until you return to campus. You are required to be tested at a CUNY COVID-19 Testing Site before you return to campus.
Safe Operations on Campus
- The CUNY SPH campus will be open 8am-9pm on Mondays through Thursdays. The campus will operate fully remotely on Fridays. University requirements for vaccination and testing, face coverings, physical distancing, and other measures are all detailed in the CUNY SPH Safe Campus Operations Plan.
- The University has a set target of 70 percent in-person or hybrid learning for the Spring semester. To minimize congestion, meetings will continue to have a virtual component and office hours will be held remotely. Additionally, visitors will be limited to essential personnel (e.g., contractors, vendors, building staff).
Continued Support for Students, Faculty, and Staff
Both, in-person and remote IT Helpdesk support will continue to be provided to students, faculty, and staff. In-person Helpdesk hours, contact information, and resources are posted on the SPH Website here. If you require in-person support, please make sure to contact Helpdesk in advance, as hours may change on a particular day.

Hello SPH students,
We hope you had a wonderful and refreshing holiday weekend. Now it is time to prepare yourself for the final class projects. Get it done as early as you can and embrace the well-deserved break following the semester.
We had incredible responses from the recent survey we sent out. Based on that, 50% of students said they were interested in receiving a Beanie as a welcome gift from the GSGA, 16.7% would like to have stickers, candles, and pens. We are working on that to send out the gifts as soon as possible. Don’t forget to update your mailing address in CUNYfirst if you have moved! If you haven’t filled out this survey yet, you can still express your opinion here.
Sincerely,
GSGA 2021-2022

WALKING WHILE TRANS: THE END OF NEW YORK’S ANTI-LOITERING LAW
RSVP | Monday, December 6 | 5 PM | Roosevelt House, 47-49 East 65th Street
The LGBTQ Policy Center at Roosevelt House invites you to attend: A NEW PUBLIC PROGRAM PRESENTED IN-PERSON AND ON ZOOM
Continuing the first full season of public events at the Roosevelt House LGBTQ Policy Center under the leadership of its new Director, Erin Mayo-Adam, we are pleased to present a panel discussion on the successful effort to repeal New York State’s “Walking While Trans” law. Through a conversation with leading policymakers, attorneys, and activists, this event will examine how a powerful policy coalition came together to advance the law’s repeal and look ahead to future LGBTQ+ policy campaigns aimed at reducing mass incarceration in New York.
In February of 2021, New York repealed the anti-loitering law commonly known as “Walking While Trans,” which, according to its critics, was used by law enforcement to harass and arrest trans people. Culminating years of grassroots activism led by trans people of color, the repeal is part of an ongoing fight to reform the police system and reduce the criminalization of New York’s queer and trans communities.
