Monday, March 8th was International Women’s Day! The theme this year was “Choose To Challenge.” What did you choose to challenge this year? We challenge you to attend the City College: Women’s Leadership Summit on Friday, March 12. It is open to ALL CUNY students! The last day to RSVP is today! See below for more information. 

We also encourage students to get involved in the SPH Graduate Student Government Association 2021-2022. Nominations will start soon this month and elections will begin in April. We are in need of student leaders! If you would like to find out more please email [email protected].

March is here and it is National Nutrition Month!  Here are some tips regarding eating healthy:

• Avoid distractions while eating
• Take time to enjoy your food
• Include healthy foods from all groups
• Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Tonight at 8:00 pm the Sustainable CUNY Club will be hosting their meeting. On Friday, March 5th, it is the Virtual Career Fair! Also, Healthy CUNY’s new version of the Guide to Surviving and Thriving at CUNY is now out!

Representatives will be in break-out rooms to give short introductions to their organizations and recruiting which will include internships, jobs, fellowships, and other opportunities followed by open Q&A.

Would you like to learn more about the Graduate Student Government Association? Curious to know what we do to support SPH students? Start working with us now so that you can be ready to serve as a student leader next year! We are looking for students who want to serve their SPH student community and be part of a team. Wellness at the School of Public Health

The Office of Student Wellness is here to provide you with short-term individual counseling, support groups, community referrals, and various events aimed at promoting healthy coping skills.   As we collectively continue to navigate the range of challenges presented by multiple pandemics, the Office of Student Wellness seeks to gain a clearer understanding of your wellness needs and preferences for engaging.  This is a reminder to please complete the survey below to assist the Office of Student Wellness in supporting you and your peers.  Your feedback is much appreciated!

CUNY LGBTQI

The CUNY Central Office of Student Inclusion Initiatives will be accepting applications for two student development programs for LGBTQI+ students this upcoming semester. Both programs will run on Fridays through the Spring 2021 semester and will offer a variety of professional and personal development experiences.

1) The CUNY LGBTQI+ Advocacy Academy facilitated by James Vacca and will focus on political advocacy, policy development, community organizing, and civic engagement. Students accepted into this program will be offered a monthly stipend. Hello SPH Students,

This Friday, February 5th is National Wear Red day!  We encourage you to wear red this Friday and tag us on our Instagram @gsga_cunysph and Facebook. As public health students, let’s raise awareness together about cardiovascular disease. Make sure to use the hashtag #WearRedSPH and we will feature you in the next newsletter!

Thank you to the students who filled out the survey! Based on the survey we asked SPH students to fill out, we found that this semester SPH students prefer to see more of:

*86.4% Concentration-specific virtual events*

*68.2 % GSGA sponsored gifts with giveaways*

*59.1% Collaborations with speakers*

Some students suggested that events be recorded to watch later on and more opportunities to meet other students. The survey will remain open this semester. We strongly encourage you to share the survey with your classmates and continue to provide us with suggestions. After all, you deserve to have fun while working hard. In the meantime, GSGA will be hosting several activities for you this semester. Keep a lookout for thee invites!

Happy Friday SPH Students!

This semester is almost over! We know it has not been easy for all of us this year. During this last week of class, we want to wish you good luck and Happy Holidays! We want to also share with you the Public Health Conference below. Are you interested in attending Academy Health’s Datapalooza and National Health Policy virtual conference in February 2021? Or need reimbursement for the cost of attending the American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting that was held virtually in October 2020? Students who did not receive a Dean’s award for presenting at APHA in 2020 are eligible to apply. GSGA supports students who are interested in attending these and other public health conferences! We want you to get the most out of your time at SPH by attending public health conferences that will enhance your studies and career. The conference sponsored by Academy Health in February 2021 will “harness and strengthen the synergies that exist between the data and policy worlds and offer innovative solutions to directly confront the challenges, opportunities, and threats facing U.S. health care.” Are you ready to attend? The New Georgia Project Action Fund

Travel to Georgia to knock on doors and support this year’s election! Sign up to travel from out of state to volunteer with the New Georgia Project Action Fund. All volunteer opportunities available to out-of-state volunteers who come to Georgia will involve in-person interactions with staff, volunteers, and voters. Safety is our top priority and we require all volunteers to follow strict COVID-19 safety guidelines, including mandatory masks and social distancing.

Hello SPH Students!

Thank you to all the students who participated in the Friendsgiving Mixer last week! We enjoyed each other’s company, shared our plans for Thanksgiving, and watched Thanksgiving-related episodes from different TV shows.

We want to make you aware of open positions for student representatives. The first is the Committee for Individuals with Disabilities and Protected Veterans. The second is the newly formed SPH Committee for Equity and Inclusion. Interested students should send a letter of interest to [email protected].

Please join the Network for College Success for a conversation on student supports at CUNY. We will start off with an overview of what is happening at CUNY, learn more about the Guide to Surviving and Thriving at CUNY and the SNAP Enrollment Campaign, as well as hear from a student panel facilitated by our partners at Young Invincibles. Attendees are encouraged to bring any questions, issues, or solutions that they have come across while working with students during the pandemic. There will be a live shared document to capture questions and solutions for all attendees to take part in.

Fieldwork Orientations 

Various dates and times | Virtual  | Register

Planning to enroll in fieldwork for Summer 2021? Your next step is to register to attend a fieldwork orientation and fill out the fieldwork pre-registration form (linked above when you click “Register”). Because summer session is a shorter session, it’s important to get started planning your field work as soon as possible! Orientation will take place on zoom and dates being offered are:

• Wednesday, December 2 | 8 – 9pm
• Monday, December 7 | 5 – 6pm
• Wednesday, January 27 | 8 – 9pm

If you are a current CUNY SPH student facing short-term financial hardship, we encourage you to submit an application to the Student Emergency Fund.

To access the application, you will need to log into SharePoint using your SPH login (sph\______) credentials.  Reach out to the [email protected] if you require assistance with SharePoint.
