Monday, March 8th was International Women’s Day! The theme this year was “Choose To Challenge.” What did you choose to challenge this year? We challenge you to attend the City College: Women’s Leadership Summit on Friday, March 12. It is open to ALL CUNY students! The last day to RSVP is today! See below for more information. 

We also encourage students to get involved in the SPH Graduate Student Government Association 2021-2022. Nominations will start soon this month and elections will begin in April. We are in need of student leaders! If you would like to find out more please email gsga@sphmail.cuny.edu.

SPH Student Clubs & Opportunities

Are you studying or interested in Health Informatics? The PHIIRE Club is looking for SPH students to run for executive positions or become members! The mission of the PHIIRE Club is to equip future public health professionals and leaders with the knowledge to address 21st-century challenges in Urban communities. The club advocates using SMAART(Sustainable, Multisector, Accessible, Affordable, Reimbursable, and Tailored) Informatics Framework to support the student projects we’ll be working on.

Student Wellness

Stress Management Support Group

Crisis Text Line text: CUNY to 741741

Tuesdays from March 2 through May 11  |  5pm – 6pm  |  Virtual

Student Wellness Counselor, Sherry Adams, will facilitate a weekly open support group for students that will promote the use of adaptive coping skills and the mutual aid dynamic. In conjunction with group participants, Sherry will share strategies for managing time, academic and personal stressors, and address the emotional impact of enduring simultaneous pandemics. This group will be a safe and affirming space for SPH students coping with a range of challenges to offer and receive support during these trying times. There will be opportunities for creative expression as a method of stress management and mindfulness exercises will be incorporated. In response to the rise in Anti-Asian/American and xenophobic harassment, Hollaback! partnered with Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC to adapt their free bystander intervention training as well as offering a de-escalation training to meet this moment. STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

CUNY LGBTQI

The CUNY Central Office of Student Inclusion Initiatives will be accepting applications for two student development programs for LGBTQI+ students this upcoming semester. Both programs will run on Fridays through the Spring 2021 semester and will offer a variety of professional and personal development experiences.

1) The CUNY LGBTQI+ Advocacy Academy facilitated by James Vacca and will focus on political advocacy, policy development, community organizing, and civic engagement. Students accepted into this program will be offered a monthly stipend. Hello SPH Students,

This Friday, February 5th is National Wear Red day!  We encourage you to wear red this Friday and tag us on our Instagram @gsga_cunysph and Facebook. As public health students, let’s raise awareness together about cardiovascular disease. Make sure to use the hashtag #WearRedSPH and we will feature you in the next newsletter!

Thank you to the students who filled out the survey! Based on the survey we asked SPH students to fill out, we found that this semester SPH students prefer to see more of:

*86.4% Concentration-specific virtual events*

*68.2 % GSGA sponsored gifts with giveaways*

*59.1% Collaborations with speakers*

Some students suggested that events be recorded to watch later on and more opportunities to meet other students. The survey will remain open this semester. We strongly encourage you to share the survey with your classmates and continue to provide us with suggestions. After all, you deserve to have fun while working hard. In the meantime, GSGA will be hosting several activities for you this semester. Keep a lookout for thee invites!

Anti-Asian Xenophobic Harassment Training

In response to the rise in Anti-Asian/American and xenophobic harassment, Hollaback! partnered with Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC to adapt their free bystander intervention training as well as offering a de-escalation training to meet this moment. 2021 Greenlight Festival: CUNY Climate Conference

CUNY LGBTQI

The CUNY Central Office of Student Inclusion Initiatives will be accepting applications for two student development programs for LGBTQI+ students this upcoming semester. Both programs will run on Fridays through the Spring 2021 semester and will offer a variety of professional and personal development experiences.

1) The CUNY LGBTQI+ Advocacy Academy facilitated by James Vacca and will focus on political advocacy, policy development, community organizing, and civic engagement. Students accepted into this program will be offered a monthly stipend. Happy Friday SPH Students!

This semester is almost over! We know it has not been easy for all of us this year. During this last week of class, we want to wish you good luck and Happy Holidays! Travel to Georgia to knock on doors and support this year’s election! Sign up to travel from out of state to volunteer with the New Georgia Project Action Fund. All volunteer opportunities available to out-of-state volunteers who come to Georgia will involve in-person interactions with staff, volunteers, and voters. Safety is our top priority and we require all volunteers to follow strict COVID-19 safety guidelines, including mandatory masks and social distancing.

Hello SPH Students!

Thank you to all the students who participated in the Friendsgiving Mixer last week! We enjoyed each other’s company, shared our plans for Thanksgiving, and watched Thanksgiving-related episodes from different TV shows.

We want to make you aware of open positions for student representatives. The first is the Committee for Individuals with Disabilities and Protected Veterans. The second is the newly formed SPH Committee for Equity and Inclusion. Interested students should send a letter of interest to GSGA@sphmail.cuny.edu.
