Hello SPH students,

Happy Thursday and welcome to this issue of the GSGA newsletter!

Despite the challenging circumstances due to the pandemic, CUNY-SPH is attempting to strike a balance between online and face-to-face learning with the commitment to provide a safe and healthy learning and working environment for students, faculty, staff and guests. We would like to take this opportunity to commend the CUNY-SPH community on their continued perseverance, optimism, and commitment to excellence.

Upcoming Opportunities

2022 Public Health Partnership Conference

The New York State Public Health Association (NYSPHA) invites you to submit a proposal to present your student work at the 2022 Public Health Partnership Conference “Public Health Equity: Building a Stronger New York.” The conference will be held both onsite and virtually, April 27-29 at the Niagara Falls Convention Center in Niagara Falls, New York. If interested, pease apply here.

There is also a virtual opportunity for student to have access to sessions at a minimal cost, more details here  ($25 student NYPHA members, $45 non-members). In addition, students who volunteer for the conference can attend that day for free but they must reach out in advance to info@nyspha.org or glenn@buffalo.edu.

Please also be reminded of the CUNY-SPH GSGA conference award. Make sure to apply if you are interested!


Belle Zeller Scholarships for CUNY Students

The deadline for 2022-2023 Belle Zeller Scholarship application submission is quickly approaching – March 4, 2022. To find out more about the scholarship criteria and application, please visit the website here.

Eligibility for the $5,000 scholarship ($2,500 each semester for up to 6 semesters) includes having completed at least 16 credits at a CUNY college, with a 3.75 GPA or better, and having performed significant community service. Scholars fall into three categories: CUNY undergraduate college, doctoral programs through the CUNY Graduate Center, and students enrolled in CUNY Professional Schools. If you have any questions about the Belle Zeller Scholars program, please feel free to send an email to: scholarship@bellezeller.org.

Town Hall: Enhancing an LGBTQIA+ Affirming and Supportive Campus at CUNY SPH

Thursday, March 3  |  2:00 pm – 3:00 pm  | RSVP 

The Office of Counseling and Wellness Services is dedicated to offering LGBTQIA+ affirming counseling and promoting the growth of LGBTQIA+ services at CUNY SPH. Students, alumni, faculty and staff are invited to this town hall on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at 2:00 pm to engage in conversation about how to foster such growth at our campus. Please register here. Hunter Gender-affirming Voice Training Group

Thursday, March 3  |  4:30 pm – 5:30 pm  | RSVP 

Hunter College Center for Communication Disorders’ gender-affirming voice training group seeks to help individuals in the transgender community explore ways to modify their voice and communication styles, thus affirming their identity in a safe and supportive environment. This is an eight-week program of a small group of young adults (3-5 people) who identify as transgender. The program will be starting Thursday, March 3, 2022 at 4:30 pm and meets every week at the same time for eight weeks. Each meeting is 60 minutes long. You can find out more details about the training group here.


The Inaugural 2022 CUNY LGBTQI+ Student Conference

Friday, April 1  |  9:00 am – 5:00 pm  | RSVP 

The CUNY LGBTQI+ Student Conference brings together LGBTQI+ students from across CUNY interested in learning more about leadership and creating change on our campuses and broader communities. The conference will take place on Friday, April 1, 2022, 9 am – 5 pm at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The conference is planned to be in-person pending approval, but there will also be a virtual option for those who prefer it. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please register here. If you have any questions please reach out to Dominique Mendez at domendez@jjay.cuny.edu.

You can also sign up to facilitate workshops on various topics of importance to foster leadership and advocacy in our LGBTQI+ students. Each workshop should be 45 minutes to an hour long. Workshops can be facilitated in-person or online. You don’t have to do the workshop alone! You can propose a workshop and express interest in co-facilitating. Sign-up to facilitate a workshop here.

Washington State Dept. of Labor and Industries Virtual Information Session
Join this session on Wednesday March 9, 2022 at 5:00 pm to learn more about Industrial Hygienist career opportunities at Washington State Dept. of Labor and Industries. Please register here. As an Industrial Hygienist, you’ll keep Washington’s workforce safe by evaluating and controlling occupational health hazards. The hazards you’ll address include noise, chemicals, blood-borne pathogens and other physical and biological agents. Your ability to maintain composure and sensitivity in challenging situations will be great assets. You’ll prepare and calibrate industrial hygiene sampling equipment, and you’ll make suggestions for abatement and provide materials to assist with compliance. We’re looking for candidates with strong research and analytical skills and technical proficiency. Strong communication and organizational skills are also desirable.
